Michael B. Jordan’s Oscar Worthy Performance in Sinners

When was the last time you saw a horror movie? And not just your typical death, supernatural or paranormal thriller that are, of course, in no short of supply. But rather, a horror movie that combines the terror of everyday real life, combined with past historical events, that includes a villain so lifelike that somehow it makes you forget that you’re watching fiction. That kind of horror. Well look no further because Sinners is that movie.

Set in 1930s Jim crow era, the movie focuses less on the hardship of life post-slavery, but on the lives of the characters living in the South who explore love, loss, business and friendship amid perceived social and economic freedom for Black Americans.

What very much seems like a period-piece drama situated around the lives of very stylish and well-travelled twins, the movie takes a dark turn when a villain presents itself in the film, that feels so lifelike, it’s easy to forget these supernatural characters don’t actually exist. While weaving in natural elements and scenery of the South, the movie takes place mostly in one setting throughout the night. Despite these seemingly restrictions, the primary location comes to life in different forms, as the film explores every corner, crevice, and angle of the location telling the story of the characters within it. A clever weaving of historical fiction and horror, Sinners takes you back in time to tell a story of perseverance, amid the presence and even attack of the darkest of forces risen to work against you.

Now to the headline. Does Michael B. Jordan deserve an Oscar for his performance, prob not. A nomination, hell yes! The mere fact that his acting can make you forget that he is playing both main characters is enough. He tapped into the demeanour, personality traits, insecurities and quirks of two, while embodying the epitome of Black southern charm, tenacity, and bravado. Watching the movie felt like you wanted to escape right into the time period, to experience and live out the lives of what seemed like enthralling but nonetheless troubling times. To act out characters that are both aspiring but terrifying is an art, and Jordan mastered the craft, demonstrating his maturity but commitment to being an actor.

Sinners is one of the movies you need to watch without the chatter of company or having read too much into its plot beforehand. It’s at its best when you watch it pure and experience the film from start to finish, not knowing what’s to come next. That’s truly the masterpiece of this film, the storytelling and subtle interweaving of surprises.
